Issey Miyake
Born in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1938, Issey Miyake studied and worked in Paris and New York before setting up the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo in 1970. In 1973 he took Paris by storm with his stunning collection, which introduced his East meets West aesthetic to the world. Since then, this visionary creator has consistently pushed back fashion boundaries in terms of materials, forms and technology and developed a design vocabulary that is truly global. Miyake's fundamental design concept of A Piece of Cloth has always been the spring board to which he returns when in need of inspiration, and from which he moves forward. He has taken this most fundamental idea and continually reinterprets and adapts it to suit both new technologies and his experiments in design. People ask me what I do - I say I make happiness.
